POULTRY SCIENCE

 

History

The Department of Poultry Science is newly established (2001). The mandate of the department is to undertake teaching, research and extension activities related to poultry science so as to cater to the needs of poultry farming community of Marathwada region of Maharashtra state.

Mission

  1.  To develop human resources in all facets of poultry sciences.
  2. To conduct applied and strategic research in different Poultry species.
  3. To train various stake holders / poultry owners to develop skills in the area of poultry production, marketing and health by developing training modules.

GOALS

  1.  Facilitate intellectual stimulation to generate, maintain and disseminate knowledge of Poultry Science by adoptive, innovative, efficient and effective strategies.
  2. Arrange capacity / skill development programs for field workers, poultry farmers and entrepreneurs to uplift poultry sector in Marathwada region.
  3. Create rural self-employment, economic prosperity and wellbeing of the resource poor farming community in this region
  4.  To meet out animal protein hunger in the rural area through improved backyard Poultry farming.

Objectives

  1. To offer graduate, post-graduate and Ph.D. courses in poultry sciences
  2. To conduct research based on the needs of poultry farming community of the region.
  3. To undertake extension work for transfer of technologies to the poultry farming community.
  4. To undertake continuing education programmes and trainings for skill development in poultry farming.

  1. “Utilization of conventional unconventional feeds in poultry rations.
  2. Study on exogenous enzymes, probiotics for increasing the feed efficiency in poultry.
  3.  “Evolving ways and means for the improving the performance of commercial, broilers and layers for higher economic gains
  4. *Micro and trace minerals requirements study for broiler and layers.
  5.  Standardizing the disinifections procdures for sustainable poultry production.
  6.  Standardizing the sanitary and phyto sanitary measures for safe production of eggs and broilers.
  7.  Prevention and control of toxin, pesticides and antibiotic residues in egg and meat.  
  8. *Value added egg and poultry meat products programme
  9.  *Development and standardization of designer eggs and low fat high protein poultry meat.
  10.  Breeding programs for different species of poultry to improve the economic traits.
  11. Standardization of managemental, nutritional methods and schedules for rearing turkeys, guinea fowls, geese, Japanese quails and domesticated ratites.
  12. Development of suitable varieties of turkeys and guinea fowl suitable for different agro climatic conditions.
  13.  Development of suitable birds for backyard poultry and establishment of hatchery.
  14.  Poultry bio security measures in organized farms.

  2. Appreciation certificate from ADP for operating disaster management for saving birds (year, 2010).
  3.  Appreciation letter from DBT for the project entitled “Sustainable income generating goat rearing for rural women empowerment in Parbhani district of Maharashtra” and Project was ranked as “Very Good” (year2014).
  4. Appreciation letter from Advisor, DBT for the project entitled “Demonstration and training programme in commercial quail production for rural women empower-ment in Parbhani district of Maharashtra” State and Project was ranked as “Good” (2013).
  5. Awarded “Best Extension workers award -2014″ by Maharashtra Animal and Fishery University Nagpur (MS).
  6. Appreciation letter from Auyrvet Limited for conducting research trials (year,2016).

Academic Activities

  1.  Created infrastructure under experiential learning for students like layer and broiler shed with necessary equipment under ICAR funding (Rs. 21.95 lakhs ).
  2. Created infrastructure like Feed mixing plant, Mini-slaughter and hatchery unit under DBT Project (Rs. 12.00 lakhs).
  3. Staff of department acting as resource person, expert, and referee in different training programme conducted by MLDB, Dept. of AH, Nagpur Vet. college, MAVM, KVKs, DBT New Delhi, SIILC, IFS ICAR

46 Trainings conducted for farmers, women empowerment and unemployed youth under various programmes (2008 to 2018)

Recent Trainings
• Training programme was organized on Commercial Broiler Production and J quail for unemployed youth from 29/12/2016 to 31/12/2016 (3 days) at Department of Poultry Science, COVAS, Parbhani.
• Training programme was organized on poultry farm raising under UNNAT BHARAT ABHIYAN, ICAR, New Delhi from 15/03/2016 to 20/03/2016

1. “Kukkutpalnasathi shedchi Bandhani” (SAKAL, Agro One 25 January 2012, Page No. 6).

2. J. Quail rearing – A joint venture-on dated 19/10/2012 in Agro One published- There were 1250 telephonic queries through out Maharashtra, Most of queries were about availability of quail chick, how to develop role model of quails especially wooden cages? vaccinations and medication required economics for J quail, How to prepare feed?, market availability and any ban on rearing etc.

3. Delivered talk for the E TV Marathi Commercial Channel in the Programme “Annadata” on Commercial layer management on dated 20/08/2011 shown on 31.12.11, 31.03.12 & 23.07.12.

4. Prepared pamphlets (1500) containing information about successful quail farming in local language.

5. Prepared Video compact discs on successful quail rearing in local language.

6. Broadcasted information on T. V. Channel and AIR about “how to rear the J. quail and importance of quail meat and eggs” in local language.

7. Published technical manual book in Marathi language on “Kukutpalan Prashishan va Margdarshan” for farmers.

8. Published information book in Marathi local language on “Sheli Palan” for farmers. Published information folder entitled “Sheli Palan” in Marathi language during three  (3) days training was arranged from 08/08/12 to 10/08/12 on “sustainable income generation through rearing of Osmanabadi goat” under DBT funded scheme.
