The Department of Animal Nutrition has been established since inception of the College and the postgraduate degree program was started in the year of 1974. The department offers vaious courses in the discipline of Animal Nutrition to B.V.Sc. and A. H. students and post graduate programme leading to the award of M.V.Sc. in the subject of Animal Nutrition. Post graduate (M.V.Sc.) courses started from 1979. Till date with 2 Ph.D. and 101 students have completed M.V.Sc. degree programme successfully during the golden period of 50 years of the Department. Though undergraduate as well as post-graduate education and transfer of technologies in the area of animal nutrition are the basic responsibilities of this department The Department has been instrumental in conducting both basic and applied research. The outcomes of the research work carried out in the department is helpful for the farmers. This department is having Feed analytical laboratory which provides the need of local livestock owners, feed manufacturers, poultry farm owners, government department and individual farmers. The academic officers in the department, besides their academic duties, provides technical services also, for preparation of livestock and poultry feed, low cost feed formulations. Total Five and one developmental projects were sanctioned and funded by different funding agencies Viz., NWDPRA, NATP and DBT. The department had a research project sponsored by Maharashtra State Govt. of Maharashtra related to Assessment of mineral profile relationship of animals, soils, feeds & fodder in Maharashtra for improvement of Livestock production potential.

The department on regular basis organizes need base training programmes, farm demonstration for farmers, livestock owners and un-employed youths, popularization of use of unconventional feed, green fodder production are carried out. The Department conducts the areas specific and need based research on livestock and poultry productivity improvement. The department is actively involved in various extension activities like participation of faculty in farmers rally, exhibitions, farmers training program, training program for educated, unemployed youths, TV and radio talks and publication of leaflets, bulletin for transfer of technology from lab to farm.
